Occupy Rosh Hashanah
Remember Yom Kippur last year? Remember the power of 1,000 voices crying out in unison for social and economic justice in the language of the Hebrew prophets, from the midst of Wall Street? That definitive moment in progressive Jewish action was an expression of desire for a just world that continues to call out from within our hearts and souls. Let’s show the world that, with or without a park to occupy, we have not given up the struggle, and that we will not give up, until we have achieved the redemption of the world.
Celebrate the one year anniversary of Occupy Wall Street (which falls on Rosh Hashanah, September 17) and the Jewish New Year together with a potluck dinner and nondemoninational holiday service! Eat some apples and honey, learn some Occupy Torah, and ring in the New Year with a bang!
Sunday, September 16, 2012 7:30pm until 11:00pm Zuccotti Park, NYC
Location tentative. Details TBA.
If you would like to volunteer to organize or lead services, please email info@occupyjudaism.org.

Jews! Unite!

Until the brutal crackdown by Bloomberg’s fascist cops, I wasn’t planning on attending any rallies tomorrow (lots of reading; gf leaves friday for fl).  In the sprit of the Bund and Dubnow (wasn’t part of the Bund nor a Zionist; mostly just advocated Jewish unification), and Jewish activism in general, I’ll be making a Yiddish sign in Lithuanian Yiddish (not a big difference).  Should I rep the Bund itself? Here’s what I’m thinking:

דער בונד קאמפט נאך (“The Bund still fights”)

יודען פעראיינקט (German spelling of “Jews”; ayin instead of aleph in “far”; “Jews unite!”)

שאפט קאפיטאליזם אב (beys instead of pey in “ob”; “Smash capitalism”)

קאנטאר און בלומבערג: פאסן נישט פאר יידן (strongest one: “cantor and bloomberg: they’re not Jews”)

אין די גאסן, צו די מאסן (classic: “in the streets, to the people”)

Though very supportive of OWS, I was quick to criticize cultural elements of the movement that sought to reappropriate the Arab Spring (rly guys? that’s kinda colonialist); but now, with the shutdowns carried out by numerous police departments across the nation, which have not varied all that much in brutality, I’m almost ready to reverse that opinion.  Ashamed of New York right now.  It was terrifying, but what happened in Oakland wasn’t surprising.

DECOLONIZE WALL STREET

resmc:

dahlias-y-rosas:

crankyindian:

What “Wall Street” and the U.S. has become — an imperial-colonial power over the world’s economics and the laws that protect it — is a direct legacy of the fraud and violence committed against Native nations.
Perhaps those who now claim to OCCUPY WALL STREET in the name of reforming America could remember their history and call it something else (see Racialicious’ post on the importance of language in opposition). Wall Street is, after all, already an occupied territory. As are all of U.S. land holdings in northern America, the Pacific, and the Caribbean.

Decolonize the opposition!

While I wholly support this, for something to be truly progressive, it should not, in my opinion, simply perpetuate classic paradigms of “ownership.”  Land is not so much important as the violence that comes along with forceibly taking it.  It’s also important to remember that different groups of indigenous North Americans had different views of ownership than Europeans (and each other, depending on the tribe).  We need to pair the deconstruction of ownership with our postcolonial critiques.
