i’m reading a short intro to fascism, and the author notes that historically—and, imo, through to today—there is a very masculine drive to obtain general knowledge and then Comment with Authority on Everything. libertarians obviously come to mind.

so bourgeois men like lawyers and doctors developed this tactic in reaction to people like feminists and socialists who were seen to specialize and focus too much on specific classes, and jews who were “invading universities” and becoming known in certain fields.  said lawyers and doctors would attach themselves to (often shitty) science outside their expertise in order to justify their notions about inferior races and women. this trend has literally never disappeared i don’t think.

when people talk about how there aren’t “gay rights or women’s rights, but human rights,” they’re channeling late 19th century conservative politics which stole universalizing rhetoric in a larger attempt to swing the proletariat to their side.

"The [fascist concentration and extermination] camps are meant not only to exterminate and degrade human beings, but also serve the ghastly experiment of eliminating, under scientifically controlled conditions, spontaneity itself as an expression of human behavior and of transforming the human personality into a mere thing, into something that even animals are not; for Pavlov’s dog, which as we know, was trained to eat not when it was hungry but when a bell rang, was a perverted animal."

Open Meeting: Say 'NO' to Neo-Nazi Golden Dawn party in New York City

locusimperium:

Golden Dawn, G.D. (in Greek, Chrysi Avgi), the neo-Nazi, ultra-nationalistic party, which was recently elected to the Greek Parliament under the pretext of concern over unemployment, austerity and the economy, and while engaging in virulent anti-immigrant rhetoric and anti-democratic, nationalistic activities, has now established a chapter in New York City. Several groups and organizations have already publicly expressed their outrage and have called for immediate action.

For over 30 years, G.D. has operated from the margins of the far right political spectrum using the symbols, practices and methods of a racist, anti-democratic and intolerant neo-Nazi ideology. The recent economic crisis, however, has brought them to the forefront of political developments. They drew the attention of the international media when one of their Parliament members physically attacked two women from Left wing parties on live television a few months ago. Before that incident and since, G.D. thugs have organized murderous attacks against immigrants, left wingers, gays as well as anyone who will stand in their way.

G.D. harbors common criminals. In the 70s, the “Fuhrer,” as they honorably call their leader, was imprisoned for setting off bombs in cinemas that showed films of Soviet production. Around the same period, members of the organization were also prosecuted for committing acts of terrorism against left wing newspapers and organizations. Today, they exhibit particular disdain against Muslims while they also openly deny the Holocaust.

In New York City, G.D. masquerades as a philanthropic organization conducting food and clothing drives. The goal of such activities is to popularize G.D.’s neo-Nazi ideology and raise the public’s sympathy. G.D.’s ‘philanthropic’ activity is a cynical ploy and has to be condemned as such. Alternatively, “Doctors of the World,” “AHEPA,” and a number of other legitimate international or community-based NGOs rely on our help to support the Greek people.

History teaches us that economic crises can breed hatred, racism and ultimately fascism. Capitalism divides us along social, cultural and political lines so as to dominated us more effectively. Few cities in the world other than New York know this better. We therefore invite immigrant organizations, unions, teachers’ associations and cultural organizations to an open meeting where we can freely discuss and decide how we can effectively act against racism, violence and fascism.

SAY ‘NO’ TO FASCISM!  SAY ‘NO’ TO RACISM!

another reason steampunk is anti-revolutionary (besides it ignoring class and unconsciously valorizing capitalism) is that, to my knowledge at least, there is very little queer representation of a time —circa WWI— which was literally filled with the queerest stuff ever (eg the first SRSes). even straight people were talking about sex (eg freud). it’s important to note the specific historical contexts and transitions regarding sex and gender; for example, fascism often billed itself as sexually liberating, while it severely repressed femininity and all forms of gender non-conformance. attitudes regarding sex and gender in the wake of fascism were still very conservative.

“The third most powerful political party in Greece, Chrysi Avgi (Golden Dawn) has now opened an office in Astoria Queens.  Golden Dawn, a Fascist, Neo-Nazi organization, in a frightening display of public behavior aimed at immigrants in Greece reminds us, too painfully, of Hitler’s thugs, actually using a swastika as their symbol. They have openly expressed anti-Semitic attitudes and denied the Holocaust. These thugs have organized violent attacks against (legal and illegal) immigrants, left wingers and gays in Greece. A member of the Greek Parliament from Golden Dawn has physically attacked two left wing women (also members of the parliament) during a live television program a few months ago. Their Greek-American contingent is presently housed in a building in Astoria that also houses a number of Hellenistic organizations, many involved in philanthropy, under the guise of raising funds to help Greeks in Greece.

All Greeks, both Jewish and Christian must openly condemn this group and vigilantly protest their presence here in the United States. Golden Dawn is an embarrassment to all who love democracy.  Golden Dawn is an abomination to all Greeks. Golden Dawn is an open threat to all Jews and many non-Jews as well. The very existence of this organization is an embarrassment to all Greeks, no matter how they feel about politics. The fact that this Neo-Nazi organization is located in Astoria is an affront to all local residents.

Join us in our campaign to make the public aware of their presence here in the United States and to demonstrate and petition for their removal from their present headquarters.

We will be joining with other organizations who wish to publicly condemn Golden Dawn.

Let us strongly let them know that here, in a country filled with immigrants and the children of immigrants, many of them Greek and Jewish, we are completely opposed to both their rhetoric and their tactics.

Contact us at friends_greek_jewry@netzero.net if you wish to join us and be informed of upcoming events.”

history-of-italy:

The infamous Manifesto of Race (Italian: Manifesto della razza), sometimes known as the Charter of Race or Racial Manifesto, was a set of laws enacted in Fascist Italy during July 1938. The laws are regarded as antisemitic in nature, stripping the Jews of Italian citizenship and with it any position in the government or professions which many previously held. The manifesto demonstrated the enormous influence Adolf Hitler had over Benito Mussolini since Italy had become allied with Nazi Germany.

can Meshuggah be a (multi-cultural?) response to the fascist aesthetics of Burzum??

Why do fascists think we want to “debate” them (as if that were even possible) rather than break their faces?

Though very supportive of OWS, I was quick to criticize cultural elements of the movement that sought to reappropriate the Arab Spring (rly guys? that’s kinda colonialist); but now, with the shutdowns carried out by numerous police departments across the nation, which have not varied all that much in brutality, I’m almost ready to reverse that opinion.  Ashamed of New York right now.  It was terrifying, but what happened in Oakland wasn’t surprising.

"The tradition of the oppressed teaches us that the ‘state of emergency’ in which we live is not the exception but the rule. We must attain to a conception of history that is in keeping with this insight. Then we shall clearly realize that it is our task to bring about a real state of emergency, and this will improve our position in the struggle against Fascism. One reason why Fascism has a chance is that in the name of progress its opponents treat it as a historical norm. The current amazement that the things we are experiencing are ‘still’ possible in the twentieth century is not philosophical. This amazement is not the beginning of knowledge—unless it is the knowledge that the view of history which gives rise to it is untenable."

Walter Benjamin, Theses on the Philosophy of History
