5772, the year i told my alma mater they were a bunch of dicks

“Dear Members of the New College Community,   Deeply embedded in New College’s institutional DNA is a commitment to mutual respect and tolerance, regardless of a person’s background.  This commitment informs the design of our academic program, our commitment to a self-regulating style of student life, and the College’s engagement with the surrounding community.  While our campus surely remains insufficiently diverse, the College has otherwise enjoyed an enviable record of fidelity to this commitment, as reflected especially in the lives of our students, graduates, faculty, and staff.   It is thus particularly troubling whenever we have an instance on campus of gross insensitivity or loathsome actions or comments.  I’m deeply distressed that we begin this school year with the worst sort of racial epithet evidently masquerading as cleverness. Once again, the student forum has provided the venue for comments that not only cause deep and direct hurt to fellow campus citizens but also demean the entire New College community.   While I have full confidence in the spirit of mutual respect and tolerance characteristic of the campus as a whole, one hateful incident is always one too many.  Throughout this year, I urge thoughtful reflection and constructive action as we collectively work to fill the New College promise.  Clearly we are not there yet.”

My reply:

“Dear New College Administration,

Perhaps the writer of said racial epithet was the white supremacist you let enroll, and whose presence on campus you have not addressed in any significant or insignificant manner.  How can you express outrage at an egregious incident when you have, at the very least, abetted an hostile environment?  It should come as no surprise now that New College is not ethnically diverse.

Sincerely,

Me
2010 Alum/Untermensch”
